Battle of Yorktown – End of the Revolutionary War – Ohio SAR Participates

Reflections On the Ohio SAR Participation in the 241st Celebratory Surrender of Lord Cornwallis to George Washington

‘Twas a Grande and wondrous day, Wednesday October 19th, 2022.  The Continentals and militiamen were glorious as “a mighty army with banners”.  Not a cloud in the sky, virtually no wind, and 53 degrees; it was like a Hollywood day.  Thousands lined the battlefields to behold the victory parade.

On a beautiful fall day on the crest of a hill in Williamstown Kentucky, friends, family and members of the Lafayette Kentucky & Cincinnati Ohio Chapters of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) gathered at the Barnes family cemetery to honor American Revolutionary War patriots John Barnes and George Wolfe.

Both of these men were pioneers in settling the surrounding rolling hills of Kentucky.

Taking a Cruise? Take Some Tips on Traveling from Benjamin Franklin

Sharing an interesting article.  Do you struggle with what to pack when you take a cruise or long trip?  Here is some advice from one of our founding fathers.  Enjoy!

This article was sourced from a website:  https://allthingsliberty.com  which appears to have some great SAR related articles.

The author of this article is:

Between his voyages to England and France, Benjamin Franklin logged more transatlantic cruises than any other founder. In fact, in his lifetime, he took a total of eight cruises.

On his final 1785 cruise sailing from France to Philadelphia, Ben continued a letter he had started in 1784 in Paris to his friend Julien-David LeRoy. This very long letter eventually morphed into a 1786 paper called “Maritime Observations” and was published by Franklin’s own American Philosophical Society in their publication Transactions.

In this mega-letter, Franklin predicted the propulsion of ships using steam instead of wind. He added additional data to his earlier research of the Gulf Stream’s water current temperature variability and its effect upon vessel speed and navigation.

Ben’s Cruise Checklist

But on a lighter note, Franklin also gave travel tips to future voyagers thinking about taking a transatlantic cruise, the average length of time being six weeks. Franklin stated that no matter what the ship’s captain said he had on board for food and drink supplies, like a frequent flier in today’s world, Franklin listed fifteen items “Passengers” should always bring with them:

The full article can be sourced below:

See, traveling is not that bad … if you are ready!

The Last Surviving American Revolutionary War Veteran – the rest of the story!

This article was captured on http://www.fold3.com which is a great website which captures all things military.

There was an article about the last surviving veterans from each of the US conflicts.

The full article written by Jenny Ashcraft is:  https://blog.fold3.com/the-last-surviving-veterans/

Each time the last surviving veteran from any war passes away, it marks the end of an era and the closing of a chapter in history. The question of who was the last often brings lively debate.

In some cases, the claims are contested and not verifiable, and in other times, early records are missing. We’ve combed our archives to share the stories of some veterans who are among the last survivors from the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Civil War, and WWI.

Daniel Frederick Bakeman

Revolutionary War: Daniel Frederick Bakeman was the last soldier from the Revolutionary War to receive a pension. He was 109 years old when he died in 1869.

Though no specific records to validate Bakeman’s claim of service survived, authorities deemed his testimony credible, and he received a pension.

Bakeman was born in Schoharie County, New York, in 1759. At age 18, he enlisted and served as a private in the Tryon County Militia. He fought at the Battle of Johnstown.

After the war, Bakeman married Susan Brewer, and they had eight children. Bakeman outlived his wife and two children. He died in Freedom, New York, on April 5, 1869.

In his 109 years, Bakeman experienced inventions that revolutionized daily living, such as trains, gas lighting, elevators, typewriters, the sewing machine, and photography. His lengthy pension file contains records, letters, and testimony.

We honor his service to our country by learning more about him.
