What’s in a name? Pirate … Buccaneer … Privateer – the impact on the American Revolution

During the American Revolution, the new colonialists were up against the British Navy, arguably the most powerful in the world.

The colonialists were also short of supplies of almost everything.

As a result, the fledgling nation resorted to piracy to get the supplies they needed and create economic losses to the British.

Today the common term is being a pirate, however the more patriotic term would be “privateer ism”.

The following article provides history about the practice, the benefits to the new country and the negative impacts to the British.  It all adds up to freedom for the new country.
