On Tuesday January 17th, while taking a road trip from Cincinnati to Green Bay, my wife and I decided to stop by the Townsends World Headquarters in Pierceton, Indiana.
My purpose was to meet with one of their seamstresses to make sure my measurements were correct. I wanted a purchase a “more formal” uniform to complement my patriot ancestors hunters frock attire.
Please note that early in the contest, a hunters frock was a formal uniform and issued with or without a regimental coat. Early on it was the preferred outerwear by Gen. Washington for the Continental Army.
Units from the various states and communities prided themselves on their unique area distinct uniforms which stood out from other groups. Only later in the war did the more formal uniforms become the standard as the level of professionalism increased.
I met with one of the eighteen seamstresses that Townsend’s engages to make period correct attire for a number of purposes. They are not used to customers stopping by, however they were very accommodating. My meeting was fun, it was quick (less than 1 hour) and I walked away with the confidence that my order would fit the first time.
A good number of the items I need I was able to purchase and walk away with. The remainder were sized and ordered for upcoming delivery.
Please note that the Townsends operation is not a retail store, and really more of a warehouse. The representative warned me not go expect a fancy place. I appreciated that and stated that what I really needed was advice and a proper fit. They delivered!
Unfortunately, my body has changed over the years and there is now mass where it once was not. A good fitting gave me confidence that I was getting what I needed and it would fit my “non standard” shape(s).
I was able (they trusted me) to go through the back room and I picked up the needed items, kind of like shopping a general store for provisions. The variety of items available was amazing. Bolts of cloth were all around, as well as finished goods.
An amazing place! Check out their online catalog (or request one of their tangible catalogues).
You may want to glue your wallet shut before you start looking for all the things you will want.
All in all, it was a great trip, a great experience and I am grateful for their assistance.
For taking their time, I promised to do a plug for their business.

Update: received my custom fitted waistcoat and breeches. They fit perfect! Wore my new uniform for a formal Presidents Day event. George and Martha Washington would be proud. As a special note, received a nice personalized card with my items. Thanks to Aimee for the waistcoat and Kim for the breeches!!
Excellent story. About the first paragraph. A hunters frock was a formal uniform and issued with or without a regimental coat. It was the preferred outerwear by Gen. Washington for the Continental Army.
Thanks Brad for your update. I made some changes. Also added a thank you to the two ladies who custom fit my waistcoat and breeches.
