Cincinnati members are blessed by having the National Headquarters for the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) in downtown Louisville Kentucky.
Located downtown in an area called “Museum Row”, in a beautiful building lies the national SAR headquarters as well as the outstanding Genealogical Research Library.
The downtown is very nice, feels safe and very clean. Just off the banks of the Ohio river with ample parking within a block (see the website for parking options) and numerous eating establishments close by.
Arrange for a time to visit the Library as well as visit some local attractions including the Louisville Slugger museum, Bourbon District, Mohamed Ali museum and of course the Churchhill Downs Horse Racing track (home of the most exciting two minutes in sports).
We were greeted by a friendly staff of committed members of the SAR, who were very helpful and showed us around to see the vast store of all things American Revolutionary War.
We were overwhelmed at the amount of material available to perform genealogical research on American Revolutionary War patriots or simply learn more about this great conflict from which a new free nation was born.
There are over 55,000 items in the collection, including family histories, state records, and online databases. There is something for researchers of all levels to explore in this nationally recognized genealogical treasure.
We learned that the SAR is working on opening a museum and have a donation drive underway to raise funds to expand and open a center. There are some unique items on display in the library.
There are over 10,000 family histories.
There is access to many genealogical databases including but not limited to: American Ancestors, Fold3, Family Search.
Also available is access to e-book versions of books available via their catalogue.
Lots to take in! A bit overwhelming! Start small and unlock some family mysteries. This SAR team is ready to help!
