Marietta Chapter Hosts Revolutionary War Patriots of the Northwest Territory Memorial Service

On Thursday May 25th, 2023, on a beautiful late spring day the Marietta Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution held a memorial service.

This event is the “Revolutionary War Patriots of the Northwest Territory Memorial Service” was held at 10 a.m..

The location of the event was Mound Cemetery, Fifth & Scammel Streets, in Marietta, Ohio.

The Cincinnati Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (CCSAR) was represented by Jack Bredenfoerder, Past President of the Ohio Society of the SAR who participated in the Color Guard and presented ceremonial wreaths.

In addition, Laurie Bredenfoerder – President of the SAR Ladies Auxiliary participated in the wreath laying.

Marietta Chapter Past President Tony Durm spoke about the recent Eagle Scout project that updated the Rufus Putnam grave area in Mound Cemetery. A project sponsored by the Marietta Chapter and planned and executed by Eagle Scout Landyn Listermann of Troop 207, which is chartered by American Legion Post 64 of Marietta.

Chapter Historian Scott Britton will speak about the Boston Massacre and other Pre-Revolutionary Activities and Marietta’s storied connection to those Boston events as we commemorate the 250th Anniversary of the Boston Tea Party. (Marietta native Rev. Daniel Story’s brother Elisha was a member of the Sons of Liberty and took part in the Boston Tea Party.)

The memorial service, wreath presentations and musket salute was followed by a tour of Mound Cemetery and then lunch (donated by Olive Garden) at St. Paul’s Evangelical Church, which is across from Mound Cemetery.

The event was well attended including SAR Compatriots including Color Guard members, their families, DAR, CAR, Scouts, and the public.

The SAR Color Guard let by Commander Bob Hill looked sharp and well disciplined.

This memorial service was an OHSSAR Color Guard activity. All participating Color Guardsman mustered at 9:30 a.m. at Mound Cemetery. There was a musket safety check and review of manual-of-arms and firing commands by the Ohio Color Guard Commander.
