Wreaths Across America – Spring Grove Cemetery – December 16th

On a mild December day Saturday the 16th, 2023 in Spring Grove Cemetery a special event took place called Wreaths Across America (WAA).

This event took place in the section of Spring Grove referred to as: Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War – Section 21.

Here almost 1000 Union veterans of the Civil War were laid to rest in a section with three mounds.  The crest of each mound is topped by a large cannon installed pointing upward to the sky as to point the direction to heaven for those fallen.

The day after the event

Most of these veterans came from the local Civil War hospital at Camp Dennison on Cincinnati’s east side.  These veterans died from their wounds or illnesses from the great conflict.

On this day over 700 wreaths were laid by volunteers on the simple white granite headstones of the fallen.

The event was led by members of the Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution,  retired and active military service men and women, Sons and Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War, as well as many volunteers from local community groups.  Members of the public at large were also invited and participated.

Informal efforts started at about 10:30 as vehicles who warehoused the boxes of wreaths overnight began to make their deliveries to the site.  Volunteers helped to prepare the boxes to be ready for opening and distribution to participants.  Hot coffee was available donated by a local Starbucks to keep us warm and caffeinated.

The event started the formal program at 12:00 to coincide with the 4200 WAA events occurring across the country.
