Thanks to George Stewart, our past President of the Cincinnati Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution.
This article which we will share with you answers that age old question “when you are the president of the United States of America, arguably the most powerful and successful country in the modern world, what do you do when you leave office?
George Stewart can probably relate to this as well as the other past Cincinnati SAR Presidents.
George Washington left political office in 1797. He returned to Mount Vernon his estate in Virginia. Seeking new challenges and having the vast Mount Vernon estate as his resource, the former president chose to set up a whiskey distillery.
George must have realized the “power of the brew” during his years leading the Continental Army and saw a real opportunity. His venture became very successful in the two short years before Washington’s death in 1799. The operation continued and thrived run by Washington’s nephew until the distillery building burned down in 1808.
