Sermon from One of Our Own – How Divine Providence Impacted the Art of War

One of our cherished members of the Cincinnati Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution shared with us a recent sermon he delivered to his congregation.

Reverend Ed Bonniwell presented this sermon on June 29th, 2025.  Dr. Bonniwell gave us permission to share this sermon with our SAR family.

The sermon addresses the many acts of divine providence which occurred during the American Revolution and later which were instrumental in victory for the American cause.

We can never fully explain these events, however are significant and seem miraculous.  Dr. Bonniwell speaks of the events of the Battle of Brooklyn as part of his Youth Education presentation to area middle school students.  Note that there was an unheard of August fog covering the water retreat of the Continental Army back to Manhattan.

We thank Dr. Bonniwell for sharing this sermon and encourage others to read and seek to understand the meaning and significance of the words.

Indeed, He does.  Any cursory glance at our history reveals the hand of divine providence. – the sustaining of the Jamestown Colony, that we prevailed at the Battle of Midway, the near destruction of George Washington’s army at Brooklyn Heights, the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown, the F5 tornado, the only one of its kind, that appeared in Washington, D. C., standing between the American soldiers and the British in the War of 1812 that decimated the overwhelming British force … victory at the battle of the bulge – all of which was the unseen hand of Providence, an absolute mercy enabling us to prevail.
