SAR Youth Education Program – How to get involved?

Thanks to those who built the Cincinnati SAR chapters’ Youth Programs.  We have great participation in these contests every year.

Our chapters youth representatives have been very successful at the state and National level as well.  This is a testament to our SAR Youth Education team, the students, the school administrators and the students parents.

Participation can take many forms, from judging patriotic themed activities to going into local schools to share history with students.

We are always looking for members who would like to get more involved in our efforts.  You need not be an expert, you can get involved knowing we have experienced mentors to help with your transition into the program.  You will find it very rewarding and satisfying to know you are making a difference.

The primary contests include:

  1. Poster – Elementary School
  2. Brochure – Middle School
  3. Essay – High School
  4. Eagle Scout – High School
  5. JROTC – Enhanced Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps – High School
  6. Outstanding Teacher of American History

As indicated above, we also have Color Guard uniformed members go into local schools to share targeted lessons / presentations on Revolutionary War history which the students and teachers really enjoy.

How do I as a SAR Member get involved in the Youth Education program?

First, reach out to Bob Bowers or Ed Bonniwell to discuss your interest.  The team of Bob, Ed and Jack Bredenfoerder are the king pins of our Cincinnati chapter program.

Second, you will need to complete the SAR Youth Protection Training Module – an online program.  This training shares with you do’s / do not’s for working with young adults in schools and events.

To get started, follow the below instructions:

  •  Create a login at SAR.org.  Then click on the e-learning tab on the blue bar or go to https://www.sar.org/courses/
  • You will find “NSSAR’s Youth Protection Training” as one of the courses available.
  • When you complete the training, please send an e-copy of the certificate to Bob Bowers.

Third, also recommended is to complete the “SAR Compatriot Training” module, as it provides a good introduction for new members.
