Cincinnati SAR Colonial Era Ale Enjoys a Successful Debut
On May 23, 2025, to kick off Memorial Day weekend, a colonial era ale (recipe provided by the Cincinnati Chapter SAR) was launched and made available to the public at MPH Brewery in Montgomery, OH.

Time to tap the barrel!
Evolution of the Name
Past President George Stewart’s brother who found the recipe and originally brewed a small batch of the beer for the Cincinnati Chapter in 2023 called it “Sons of Liberty Yankee Ale”. That was shortened to “Yankee Ale” when discussing it with MPH, then the week of the launch it was advertised to the public as “Olde Yankee Ale”.

On the day of the launch the tap was labeled “Yankee”, but when the beer was officially launched at 6:00 pm, we learned that the name was now “Monty Liberty” (Monty is the guy on the MPH logo with the speedometer head and hop beard). MPH originally stood for “Montgomery Public House”, but it now stands for “Monty’s Pint House”. They like renaming things. Anyway, the name seems to have settled as “Monty Liberty”, and it is listed under the “Seasonal” offerings.

The style of “Monty Liberty” is being called “Yankee” or “Yankee Ale”, so we in the end we are responsible not only for a new beer, but a new style of colonial era beer. It is also described online as an “American Amber / Red Ale”.

Enjoying a nice day on the MPH patio
Cincinnati SAR had a total party of 19 people total in attendance over a period of about four hours, counting family members and guests. We had seven members in attendance, four in uniform or colonial attire. A couple of the ladies were also dressed in colonial attire.
The establishment became very busy by the time the beer was officially launched. We spoke to many members of the public, handed out many CCSAR wooden challenge coins, some SAR America 250 pins, and presented a SAR America 250 Flag to MPH Brewery.
We both directly and indirectly (with our promotional efforts) put a large dent in the first keg of Monty Liberty.
Chapter members in attendance included Nathan Chester, Scott Freeman, Jeff Hartman, and George Stewart in Colonial attire, and Bob Bowers, Mike Gunn, and Brad Jarard were in present day attire.

This batch of Monty Liberty should be available for 2-3 months, so stop by and have a pint if you are in the area.
Where: MPH Brewery is located at 7880 Remington Road, Montgomery, OH 45242, just off the east side of Montgomery Road, about half a block north of the Original Montgomery Inn.
We are planning to arrange a fundraiser for Cincinnati SAR at the brewery during the summer. The date will hopefully be announced soon with more advance notice than the beer launch.
Party Hearty!
