How Did George Washington Contribute to the Constitution of the United States?

On Saturday September 14th, the Cincinnati Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution held a Constitution Day Luncheon.

George Washington leads the effort to revise the Articles of Confederation, leading toward the ratification of the US Constitution

Our Chapter President Scott Freeman presented the history of the First Continental Congress, the goals, the challenges and the timelines for the creation and ratification of the US Constitution.

There are many contributors to these events.  The geographical distances and limited communications (hey, this was pre-internet, no cell phones, no texting) made it difficult to get the same people in the room to decide on anything.  The amount of time (multiple years) also was a challenge to getting the same folks back to discuss, debate, and agree on anything.

George Stewart shared this article published by the Mount Vernon Foundation which outlines the role George Washington played in these events.  Note that Washington’s role predated his role as a military leader.

The article presents George Washington’s role as a nurturing statesman, sort of a referee, not picking sides, helping to keep the proceedings on a move forward path.

This must have been difficult for him as he had his own opinions.   He was reportedly not interested in politics but accepted the role nonetheless.
