Cincinnati SAR President – Youth Awards – Ironton, Ohio – April 25th

As part of the Cincinnati Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution Youth Education program, Chapter President Scott Freeman visited his hometown of Ironton Ohio to present awards to worthy students.

On April 25th, Scott presented four Youth Good Citizenship certificates to the 7th and 8th grade winners (one male and one female in each grade) at St. Joseph High School in Ironton, OH.

Scott presented these awards in front of the school and faculty immediately following a school-wide mass that morning.  Parents of the winners were also notified and invited to attend, and some grandparents attended.

Scott shared about his local Ironton background and connections, the mission of the SAR, what we do, and what the award is for before the presentation.

Prior to the mass, Scott also spoke to two history classes about genealogy, the SAR, Civil and Revolutionary War History, and local connections.

The Vice Principal who introduced herself afterwards is a member of the DAR in Maysville, along with her sister who lives there.  She was absolutely thrilled that we provided these awards.

Unfortunately, there are no active SAR nor DAR chapters in this immediate area.

This year, the Cincinnati SAR changed their award presentation process by deciding to go to the award winner’s school and make these presentations in their class, or in this case at a school wide event.  The sparkle in the eyes and the pride of these award winners will melt your heart.  This change has been a huge success.

In the near future, an additional six certificates will also be presented at the Ironton (public) Middle School.  We will share updates for this.

Scott shared that it was a great thrill for him to help the SAR get involved and recognize deserving students in my hometown.

Kudos to these fine students and we are grateful to the teachers and school administrators who supported participation in this award process.
