Many of our events feature our Color Guard. More often than not, we execute a musket volley (boom!) to demonstrate how our period muskets perform.
Even though we are blank firing (no projectiles), there are safety risks. To address that risk, we have specific protocols and procedures to follow to make these demonstrations safe for us and spectators.
To enhance our safety skills, there was a training class held on June 29th at The Abruzzi Club in Westerville, OH. This training was intended to guide newer Color Guard members and refresh our more experienced members.

Larry Potter and Bob Hill lead the indoor training
Larry Potter of the Ben Franklin Chapter taught the musket orientation and safety training, and OHSSAR Color Guard Commander Bob Hill taught the Von Steuben musket handling and firing commands.

Eager to learn Color Guard members share knowledge and experiences with others
It was a long hot day that included four hours of training (at least the safety training was indoors) and good 3 ½ hours of driving or riding in the car, but both new and very experienced Color Guard members agreed that it was very beneficial.
The more seasoned attendees shared much experience and useful information with the class.
Many questions and much interaction among the experienced and newer Color Guard Members
The training also ensured that the OHSSAR Color Guard was doing maneuvers and following commands in the same standardized way although some may have learned differently.
Those that attended will receive a certification for each part of the class.

The plan is for another training class to be held later in the year get all Color Guard members through this specialized class.
Thanks to the leaders for holding the class and we appreciate The Abruzzi Club in Westerville, OH for hosting the event.
Huzzah!
