George Washington was fighting a war with two enemies, the British and a disease smallpox. Washington had the disease when younger, so knew that its spread amongst the troops would be devastating to the American cause.
Washington made the bold move to inoculate all the American troops who had not had the virus. This inoculation process was new and dangerous. As it turns out, the bold move was successful and the American troops stayed healthy enough to continue to fight.
