Overview of the Stamp Act

The Stamp Act of 1765 was a significant British law that imposed a direct tax on the American colonies. It required colonists to purchase special stamped paper for various printed materials, including legal documents, newspapers, and playing cards.

This act was part of Britain’s efforts to raise revenue to cover the costs of maintaining troops in North America after the French and Indian War.

Why is this important?  This event was a key event leading up to the dissatisfaction of the colonists and a factor in the wave of events leading to the American Revolution in 1776.
