Revolutionary service records of the National Archives and papers of Old Lancaster County Pennsylvania clearly establish that James Kain, Jr. served as both a corporal and a sergeant guarding the Continental Congress. These sources also verify that in 1782 James Kain, Jr. served as a private in the 5th Company, 8th Battalion of the Lancaster County, Pennsylvania Militia under the command of Captain Samuel Boyd. While these references are essential for establishing James Kain, Jr. as an official patriot of the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, the details of his pioneering post revolutionary journey westward give us an even greater perspective into his strong, industrious, unfailing character; the true foundation of his patriotism.
