Local descendents of those who served in the Revolutionary War marked the 230th anniversary of the start of the war at noon Tuesday, April 19, 2005 at the World Peace Bell in Newport, Kentucky. Members of the Greater Cincinnati chapters of the Sons of the American Revolution, Daughters of the American Revolution and Children of the American Revolution gathered to watch the SAR Nolan Carson Memorial Color Guard fire muskets, commemorating the beginning of the revolution. There were approximately 60 people in attendance. On April 19, 1775, local militia called minutemen and British troops clashed in skirmishes at Lexington and Concord in Massachusetts. SAR chapters across Ohio observed the anniversary of the start of the war. The SAR hopes to turn the event into an annual commemoration. The program’s Master of Ceremonies was Harry Geimeier. The program included music and reading of a Proclamation by Newport City Mayor Thomas L. Guidugli proclaiming April 19 as Patriots’ Day. Other speakers were Joseph Langlitz of the Fort Washington Chapter, Children of the American Revolution, Ruth S. McGraw of the Cincinnati Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, and from the Cincinnati Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution speakers were James Hough who spoke on his patriot ancestor; John Simmons who spoke on the SAR, remarks by Chapter President Paul M. Wilke, and William Fahr reflecting on the start of the Revolutionary War. Compatriot Thomas Geimeier closed the ceremony. The chapter displayed their Howard Miller flag collection consisting of 70 flags that illustrate different periods of American history. (The ceremony received publicity in the Cincinnati Post and Channel 12 Television)
