2017 Youth Award Winners

On Wednesday, April 5th the Cincinnati Chapter SAR held a banquet for the 2017 Youth Award Winners. The Cincinnati SAR Chapter is pleased to announce the following winners.

Americanism Poster Contest

Americanism Poster Contest for 4th and 5th grade elementary students in the Cincinnati area. The theme this year was the teacher’s choice of any PERSON or PERSONS from the Revolutionary War. The purpose of the contest is to encourage our young people to research an American Revolutionary War topic and then creatively express what they learned about it through the vehicle of a 22” x 28” poster. There were 14 posters submitted this year.

Sgt. Moses Adams Memorial Americanism Brochure Contest

The brochure contest for Middle School students in addition to our Elementary School poster contest. The Sgt. Moses Adams Memorial Americanism Brochure Contest is intended for 6th, 7th , 8th and 9th grade middle school students in the Cincinnati area. The brochures must conform to the theme: One of the Nation’s Five Founding Documents: 1.Articles of Confederation; 2.Declaration of Independence; 3.Constitution; 4.Federalist Papers; 5.Bill of Rights. There were 24 brochures submitted this year.

The George S. and Stella M. Knight Essay Contest

The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) invites all high school students (9th through 12th grades) interested in the American Revolution to participate in the George S. & Stella M. Knight Essay Contest. The contest is open to all students attending home schools, public, parochial, or private high schools in that same grade range. The National Association of Secondary School Principals has placed this program on the 2017-18 NASSP List of Approved Contests, Programs, and Activities for Students.

To participate, students must submit an original 800- to 1,200-word essay based on an event, person, philosophy or ideal associated with the American Revolution, Declaration of Independence, or the framing of the United States Constitution. Each student’s essay will be judged based upon its historical accuracy, clarity, organization, grammar and spelling, and documentation.

The D. G. High / Joseph S. Rumbaugh Historical Oration Contest

The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) invites all high school students (9th through 12th grades) interested in the American Revolution to participate in the Joseph S. Rumbaugh Historical Oration Contest. The contest is open to all students attending home schools, public, parochial, or private high school students in that same grade range. While the preliminary rounds of the contest begin at the local level, students may eventually advance to the state or national levels, eventually held in June during the annual SAR Congress. The National Association of Secondary School Principals has placed this program on the 2017-18 NASSP List of Approved Contests, Programs, and Activities for Students.

Each student’s five- to six-minute speech (and accompanying manuscript) will be judged based upon its composition, delivery, significance, and historical accuracy and relevance.
